Pitching Fundamentals

Coach Chuck McElroy

Develop velocity, command, and a diverse pitch arsenal with expert coaching.

Overview

At Xpress, we prioritize strong pitching fundamentals, command, and consistency. Our pitching program focuses on teaching players how to properly develop their mechanics while learning how to control the strike zone.

Players are first taught the importance of commanding the fastball and changeup before progressing to breaking pitches such as the curveball. Developing these foundational pitches allows athletes to build confidence, improve control, and understand how to pitch effectively rather than simply relying on velocity.

Athletes will also learn the mentality of a pitcher, including pitch sequencing, situational awareness, and spot placement during live counts. It is important for players to understand that college coaches and scouts look for pitchers who can command the strike zone and locate pitches effectively, not just those who throw hard. The ability to pitch to specific spots and control different speeds is what separates good pitchers from great ones.

Training Goal

Players will have the opportunity to develop proper pitching mechanics, body stability, and efficient energy transfer throughout the pitching motion. Training will also focus on improving arm strength, accuracy, and command of both fastballs and off-speed pitches.

Through consistent instruction and repetition, athletes will develop the physical tools, mental approach, and confidence needed to compete effectively on the mound.
